Claudine
Typically French, with quick darting dark eyes, and chic, bobbed hair, Claudine is Mam'zelle's unscrupulous niece who comes to St. Clare's after attending a convent school which she found too strict. Claudine is cunning, and always gets her own way, but her honesty and straight forward nature make her a popular pupil among most of the girls.
They love her sense of humour, her infectious laugh, and her unusual American expressions - on her first day, she greets her classmates with "hallo buddies".
She hates games, loves sewing and darning, and, like her Aunt MAthilde, is terrified of "catching a freckle".
Claudine always gets her own way and is unwittingly helped by her doting Aunt Mathilde. She is looked down on by Angela.
Claudine is based on a character from Enid Blyton's schooldays - a Belgian girl who came to her school for a term or two, and did exactly as she pleased.
